In 2015 a group of friends and family from MDI, and over the course of a week, took on the West Highland Way, the 100 mile trek that leads from just north of Glasgow to Fort William. Staying in B&B’s they walked as much as eighteen miles each day. This is the most popular of the Scottish long distance paths and for good reason. Starting in the Lowlands, the scenery quickly becomes dramatic as the tall peaks of the Highlands present themselves in the distance.
Growing up in southern New England, Madeira has been walking and hiking since he was a young teen. His family were long time members of the Appalachian Mt. Club and he found work for AMC in a variety of seasonal and staff jobs. He was also Business Manager at Baxter State Park. He served in the Coast Guard and is a graduate of the University of Maine. When a daughter and her family were living in Glasgow, he became interested in the Scottish hiking experience and was introduced to the West Highland Way. He and Suzanne are now retired and live in Bernard.
