Technology Working Group

Our third working group met on Thursday to discuss technology and space design. We began by sharing anecdotes about our favorite pieces of technology, but as the conversation progressed, we clarified that organizational and personal infrastructure is the most important component of making technology accessible; it’s more about the community than the technology. Additionally, we discussed the importance of designing a building that supports electronic and data systems that can grow and adapt over time. The concept of a makerspace that allows for a wide variety of learning experiences - some of which may be messy and/or loud - was explored as well. Some key words were modular and upgradeable. Next week, we look forward to identifying specific space requirements for a few models of making as well as particular computer-based technology needs.

During the session, we built a tool for ongoing idea development. We hope that you’ll take a moment to add your thoughts to our Technology and Space Design Padlet. You can add a sticky note by double-clicking on the background and typing a comment.

Questions to think about before we meet again include:

  • What connection is there between emerging library services and infrastructure requirements?

  • Who within the library community will enable a makerspace to be successful?

  • How can a flexible space for learning and making also be an inspiring place for discovery and reflection?
