Edith Schriever will read from her book "Talos and the Yellow Suitcase" and the Greater Sedgwick String ensemble will perform baroque pieces to compliment the chapters in the book
"Talos and the Yellow Suitcase" follows the story of Talos, who is stuck in a black-and-white world. One day, entering a new world full of color, joy, and feelings, the questions begin. Talos learns to see from a different perspective. Noticing something odd leads to new explorations and the uncovering of some answers, but newfound answers soon lead to more questions for Talos.
Edith Schriever (-Korstanje) grew up in the Netherlands surrounded by books. In 4th grade, she had read all the books in the little school’s library and she was the only student allowed to check out not one, but two books per week from the “library bus” that stopped at her school once a week.
Edith always knew she wanted to be a teacher, a mother and eventually a writer. She became a teacher in the Netherlands and taught for seven years, before she and her husband Ron (a scientist at the Jackson lab) moved to Bar Harbor. She fell in love with the island and became a mother of two wonderful boys! The Korstanje family (now of 4) moved back to the Netherlands where they welcomed a daughter into their lives. But it became evident that the magic of the ocean was pulling. There simply is no place like MDI. Thus, the Family (now 5) moved back to MDI and never looked back!
Her three (now grown) children learned English at the Jesup Library’s story hour, spent time after school in the library and will always have that special place to look back on.
Edith worked at many different places, including Arcady Music Society, Kids Corner, in retail, the MDI YMCA and Conners Emerson Elementary School, and currently as the cook at the MDI Biolab. And in 2021 she finally became a writer with the publication of her first book ‘Talos and the Yellow Suitcase’.
If she isn’t writing or reading, you might find her in her newly built workshop at the lathe, where she is wood turning, doing a new jig saw puzzle, cooking and trying out new recipes, renovating her house or hiking with her dog Boomer in the park.
