Fixing Past Mistakes and Creating a Healthier Future for the Great Meadow at Sieur de Monts with Brian Henkel
May 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The Great Meadow wetland complex is an iconic destination in the heart of Acadia National Park. Locals, seasonal residents, and vacationers all enjoy its scenic beauty and abundant bird life. But look a little closer and you’ll see the evidence for and consequences of past manipulations and recognize the Great Meadow is not all it could be. Changing rainfall patterns only add to the problems. Friends of Acadia, in partnership with Acadia National Park, are working through the Wild Acadia initiative to look closely at how to improve the Great Meadow with the recognition that more change is coming, some of which is unknown. How do you decide where to resist those changes, where to allow those changes to happen, or where to direct those change in a dynamic environment? What should be the goal for the health of the Great Meadow? Brian Henkel, Wild Acadia Project Coordinator, will be providing some of the history of manipulations within the Great Meadow and their consequences. He’ll then ask “What are your priorities for the future of the Great Meadow?”
