Local Fruits and Vegetables for Mainers in Need: Nutrition Incentive Programs in Maine
April 25 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Learn about the ways nutrition incentive programs in Maine help expand access to local food, increase sales for farmers and develop community connections. This talk is cosponsored by the Bar Harbor Food Pantry as part of the Hancock County Food Drive. Donations of nonperishable food will be collected at the talk.
“Nutrition incentive” programs, which provide extra fruits and vegetables to low-income people, have been growing throughout the state of Maine in the past decade. Shannon Grimes, Nutrition Incentives Project Manager at Maine Farmland Trust, will talk about how Maine has been using this tool to support not only the people who receive the food but farmers as well. Emily Herwerden, Nutrition Education Coordinator at Healthy Acadia, will speak about how nutrition incentive programs have helped in Hancock County and how Healthy Acadia has worked with the Bar Harbor Food Pantry to help educate their clients about the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and how SNAP benefits can be used, as well as helping obtain fresh produce for the pantry.
