Nancy grew up in the Midwest where she received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in English. Over the years she and her husband Dan have lived in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Michigan, North Carolina and Massachusetts, but they have always spent as much of each summer as possible on Mount Desert Island. From the beginning, they knew that they would live here permanently as soon as possible.
Nancy’s career has had two threads – teaching “reading” and working for nonprofit organizations. The latter include a community foundation, a family foundation, a literacy volunteer organization, and a neighborhood settlement. Her career as a reading teacher has ranged from junior high language arts, to literature and composition for college students. Lately, however, Nancy has been teaching in basic education programs for adults, with a focus on beginning literacy and English for speakers of other languages. Volunteering for the Jesup combines Nancy’s long-term interests in reading and community organizations.
